Getting to know the dogs .....Dr. Phil Surf ‘n Turf Kennel is dedicated to the dream of creating genetic outcross retrievers from England and the United States. We have owned retrievers since 1964 and have worked and breed Goldens since 1986. We began to look into the pedigrees of our dogs. We saw a great deal of inbreeding  in the most famous field trail Golden bloodlines of the day. Field Trial people demand a dog of high intelligence and ability. To get this they inbreed their dogs at an alarming rate. If you want a high rolling retriever you normally look into “trial” litters for that extra special pup. But with that pup can come genetic problems. To solve this genetic problem and maintain a high level of canine intelligence and ability we began to look to other countries and their Golden Retriever gene pool. We wanted dogs and pups that could compete and hunt with skill yet not be closely related.   England has had only two kennels win their retriever championship Holway and Treunair. Over the years there have been but four Goldens win, handled by three people from two kennels. We presently have two bitches from each of these kennels. Both bitches have been cleared for hip, elbow, heart and eye problems. They and their offspring are health tested, asked to participate in hunt test programs to prove their skill and are breed to only a handful of the finest Field Trail and Amature Field Trial Champions this country produces.   Our Dream It is hoped that our breeding program produces a quality, intelligent dog that will work in the field with you on upland game, in the swamp for waterfowl and at your side on a hunt test weekend. It is also our hope, that by producing an international outcross Golden you will escape the pitfalls of their line breed relatives.    Dr. Phil & Head Nurse Meggie P. Phillip Bollenbacher, D. Ed.  The real Dr. Phil had spent his life in education. He was an Accounting major from Villanova University that some how found himself teaching elementary school in the City of Philadelphia. He acquired a master degree form Temple University and a Doctor of Education, major area of interest, Educational Administration, from Penn State. He has taught elementary school, held principalships in elementary and secondary schools and served three districts as a superintendent of schools. Dr. Phil is a life long hunter and was introduced to a 20guage shotgun while riding on his Dad’s shoulders at the age of three. His vocation was education. His avocation is the outdoors: hunting, camping, canoeing, and training retrievers. He is a behavioral scientist by trade a dog lover by compulsion. He is both a NAHRA & AKC Hunt Test Judge.   Margaret S. Bollenbacher, RN. Maggie is a graduate of the Bryn Mawr School of Nursing. She has spent her life working to keep her husband in dog food and leashes. Maggie has produced three of her own outcrosses from fine middle European bloodlines.   Maggie’s area of interest is in the early phases of puppy training and obedience.
